Sunday River Welcomes Winter Back with 2016-17 Opening Day

Thanks to a mix of natural and manmade snow, Sunday River Resort will open for skiing and snowboarding tomorrow, Wednesday, November 23, 2016.

New this year, the resort will offer top-to-bottom skiing and snowboarding on its Aurora Peak with trails including Northern Lights, Paradigm, Borealis, Aludra, and Lights Out. All opening day terrain is for advanced skiers and snowboards only; snowguns are scheduled to run with active snowmaking as long as temperatures allow. Visibility will be limited, and manmade and natural obstacles do exist.

To access Sunday River's opening day terrain, guests will board the Chondola chairlift out of the South Ridge base area starting at 9 a.m. Once at the top of the chairlift, skiers and snowboarders can either schuss into the Aurora Basin for top-to-bottom laps; take advantage of the early season terrain park located near the top of the Chondola; or grab a quick bite and beverage at the adjacent mid-mountain Peak Lodge.

To return to South Ridge before the Aurora Peak Quad closes for last chair at 3:30 p.m., guests will take the Borealis, Aludra, Lights Out trails to Lower Downdraft trail before downloading on the Chondola chairlift. Sunday River will update its online Mountain Report tomorrow morning by 8 a.m. with all open terrain and indicate and grooming and/or snowmaking.

Tentatively planned as the wild card for tomorrow's opening is terrain on Barker Mountain, including Right Stuff, Ecstasy, Sunday Punch, and Lower Sunday Punch trails. Should this terrain open alongside Aurora Peak, it too will be for advanced skiers and riders only. Guests will access it by way of the Barker Express chairlift out of the Barker Mountain base area.

Guest services offered out of South Ridge Lodge include lift tickets, rentals, season passes, and food and drink available to purchase out of the Food Court and Foggy Goggle. Sunday River's mid-mountain Peak Lodge will also offer food and beverages available to purchase; the Barker Lodge will open if its respective terrain is able to open. As is typical in the early season, Sunday River will continue to make snow and open new terrain as weather conditions allow. Lift ticket window rates for tomorrow are $49 for adults, $39 for teens, and $35 for juniors/seniors. Prices will increase as more terrain opens; guests should purchase lift tickets in advance online to save on window rates. Updates on future trail openings and lift ticket pricing will be made available online within Sunday River's Mountain Report.
