The Quebec Ski Areas suspend their operations indefinitely
Quebec Premier Francois Legault has requested that all ski areas suspend their operations, for an indefinite period, as of 4pm today.
Having heard the call of Quebec Premier François Legault, Quebec ski areas announce that they are suspending their winter activities—skiing, snowboarding, tubing, fatbiking, skitouring, and others—indefinitely starting at 4 pm today.
"We fully understand the situation. Our industry wants to help to manage this crisis, and we believe that the priority must be public health. We are aware that this decision will weaken the industry's financial performance and will have a major impact on the33,000 people who work in our sector. We are confident that the government will provide the necessary support to the many families and business owners affected by this decision,"declared Yves Juneau, president and CEO of the Quebec Ski Area Association (ASSQ).
The ASSQ remains in constant communication with representatives of the Direction de la Santé publique du Québec, the Ministry of Tourism, the Alliance de l'industrie touristique du Québec, and the crisis management group set up by the industry's partners. This is why ski areas were able to remain open until now as a result of their compliance to the various directives issued to date.
The industry intends to comply with all new directives from the Public Health Agency of Canada and from the government of Quebec. The Association is anticipating a high number of calls and emails to the ski areas' customer service departments and therefore asks everyone to be patient for follow-ups to the various requests and questions. The ASSQ invites the public to follow the situation by consulting the announcements made by each ski area on social media. On behalf of all ski areas, the ASSQ is sincerely sorry for any inconvenience this decision may cause and thanks Quebec's 1.4 million skiers and snowboarders and the many visitors from outside the province for their understanding.
